That brick siding that you love looks very classic and lovely, but did you know there is upkeep to keep it from deteriorating over time?
Cleaning Your Brick
The brick on your home is of course exposed to the elements on a 24/7 basis and of course they are ideal for picking up dust and dirt. This can lead to damage over time, so twice a year you should clean your bricks. A simple spraying them down with a garden hose to remove any dirt and grime that’s built up is sufficient. In areas where there might be some tough spots you might use a scrub brush and soapy water. Avoid temptation to use a power washer as it can damage the brick.
Checking for Damage
You should check at least once a year for damage or just make a habit of checking for damage when you clean. The first type of damage you need to look for is impact damage. This would be resulting from something hitting the brick and causing cracks, chips, or other damage. The list of sources for this is endless and may not have been something you could have prevented. The second type of damage is water damage. This would occur when rain or splashing water repeatedly hits an area of the brick and starts to wear it away. When you do find damage scrub the area to remove loose material and keep an eye on the area to see if it gets worse over time. If the damage is cause by an environmental issue, you might just need to adjust your landscaping or install drainage.
